This policy explains what data we collect when you use What Was I Doing? ("the app"), how we use it, and what rights you have. We keep this simple and honest because we have no interest in doing anything shady with your data.

1. Who we are

What Was I Doing? is a personal productivity tool that helps you track what you were doing using short voice or text notes ("breadcrumbs"). The app is operated as an independent project. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at the address in section 9.

2. What data we collect

We only collect what is necessary to run the app:

• Email address - collected when you create an account, used to identify you and send account-related emails (e.g. password reset).
• Breadcrumb notes - the short text or transcribed voice notes you save in the app. These are stored in your personal account and are not shared.
• Voice transcriptions - when you use the voice input feature, your speech is transcribed using your browser's built-in Speech Recognition API. This processing happens locally in your browser; we do not send audio recordings to our servers.
• Notification preferences - if you enable nudge notifications, we store that preference locally on your device.
• Theme and display preferences - stored locally in your browser (localStorage) and not sent to our servers.

We do not collect your name, phone number, location, or any payment information.

3. How we use your data

• To create and manage your account.
• To store and retrieve your breadcrumb notes so they are available across your devices.
• To send essential account emails (e.g. password reset). We do not send marketing emails.

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.

4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

If you are in the UK or EU, we rely on the following legal bases:

• Contract - processing your email and notes is necessary to provide the service you signed up for.
• Legitimate interests - maintaining the security and reliability of the app.
• Consent - for optional features such as browser notifications, which you can withdraw at any time.

5. Where your data is stored

Your account and breadcrumb data is stored on Supabase, a cloud database service. Supabase stores data in the EU by default and is GDPR-compliant. You can read their privacy policy at supabase.com/privacy.

Preferences such as your theme choice are stored in your browser's localStorage and never leave your device.

6. How long we keep your data

• Your account and notes are kept for as long as you have an account.
• If you delete your account, all associated data is permanently deleted within 30 days.
• You can delete individual breadcrumbs at any time from within the app.

7. Your rights (UK/EU)

Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access - request a copy of the data we hold about you.
• Correction - ask us to correct inaccurate data.
• Deletion - ask us to delete your account and all associated data.
• Restriction - ask us to stop processing your data in certain circumstances.
• Portability - request your data in a machine-readable format.
• Objection - object to processing based on legitimate interests.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us (see section 9). We will respond within 30 days.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or your local EU supervisory authority.

8. Cookies and local storage

We do not use tracking or advertising cookies. We use localStorage to save your app preferences (theme, font size) on your device only. Supabase uses a session cookie to keep you logged in - this is strictly necessary for the app to function.

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will note the updated date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
